History of the sugar agribusiness

The history of the sugar agribusiness in Honduras dates back to the end of the 19th century, with a sugar mill in the Cantarranas area, which produced very small quantities of sugar to supply the employees and inhabitants of San Juancito and part of Tegucigalpa.

Since that date, eight sugar mills have been installed in Honduras, of which, after various events over the years, seven are currently in operation.

It is currently one of the best established industries in Honduras with a history that supports it and a promising future.

1938

The Compañía Azucarera Hondureña marks the beginning of this productive sector.

1948

The Compañía Azucarera Chumbagua begins operations in San Marcos, Santa Barbara.

1968

Azucarera Choluteca is born in the south of the country.

1974

Azucarera del Norte is born in El Progreso, Yoro.

1976

ACENSA (now Azucarera La Grecia) in Choluteca and ACANSA (now Azucarera Tres Valles) in Francisco Morazán, begin production.

1976

With the participation of seven sugar mills as founding members, the Asociación de Productores de Azúcar de Honduras - APAH (Sugar Producers Association of Honduras) is created.

1976

Azucarera Yojoa is established in Río Lindo, Cortés.

2005

FUNAZÚCAR is created to promote CSR in agribusiness.

2011

The Sugar Agroindustry receives its first FUNDAHRSE Seal of Corporate Social Responsibility.

2015

The APAH Sustainability Committee is formed. Signing of the Sector Protocol.

2017

APAH becomes the first industry to receive a Sustainability Report in accordance with the GRI Standards at the Central American level.

2018

APAH becomes the first industry in Latin America to obtain a Sustainability Guiding Principles Guide with the advice of WWF.

2019

APAH receives its second Sustainability Report.

2020

APAH is recognized by FUNDAHRSE as the First Socially Responsible industry in Honduras.

2021

APAH is recognized for the second consecutive year as a Socially Responsible industry. An agreement on Human Rights Principles of the Sugar Agroindustry is also signed with CONADEH.

2022

APAH receives its third Sustainability Report and is recognized for the third consecutive year as a Socially Responsible Industry.
